Akheilos trotted through the sparse scrub land of the flood plains, taking note of a hut or two in the distance and a herd of cattle seemingly passed out in a paddock.
"So. Humans. Were your particular humans in a village or a shaman hut, or are we just going to go wild here?" he asked Illyphon over his shoulder.

"The amount of pelts I saw were more than one human could use, I believe they may have been trading the pelts to other humans. As far as I'm concerned they're all a threat," Ilyphon growled, the fur on the back of his neck rising.
"Wouldn't killing humans put the other wolves in danger?" Ayunli spared a thought for the other wolves living in the region who might be affected.
"We'll just have to be thorough so no humans live to want revenge," Ilyphon said as if it was the obvious course of action.
"That's cold."
"So is my dead child."
"That's dark," Ayunli didn't have time to feel awkward because Ilyphon was grinning at his own smartassery, hair still raised. Nothing like humor to forget about your dead family.

The banter was amusing but Akheilos felt no need to contribute. He looked again between the huts in sight, not noticing any movement.
"Do you think perhaps the humans here are still asleep?" he wondered aloud. "If you wanted to, now would be the time to get your revenge."
He barely cared that the humans might want revenge when they awoke. Illyphon deserved his revenge, and as far as Akheilos was concerned, the wolves were better off getting farther away from the humans anyway. Skinning wolves and trading their pelts?
"Why did they want your kin's pelts?" he looked at Illyphon. "Something about your color or is there more to it?"

"L'Ailee had wings. And if they figured out that my kind has near impenetrable coats it would be useful armor to them," they passed through a patch of sunlight, Ilyphon's coat refracting the light like a giant prism, casting sparkles and bits of rainbow light everywhere.
"Also, they sparkle," Ayunli chimed in, blinking when one of the bits of light got him in the eye.
"It's an inconvenience these days," Ilyphon grumbled. The sparkling had been cool at first, but now that the humans were able to spot his kind easier just by bringing some direct light it was incredibly dangerous. He pricked his ears and listened as he walked, considering Akheilos' suggestion.
"I can hear them breathing, it's deep and steady. I believe the humans here are still asleep," he sneered a bit in disgust, "I had hoped for something more rewarding than killing them like sleeping sheep, but it's a start."
"Feel free to continue, I'll catch up with you in a moment, or come join if you want to watch or investigate the huts," Ilyphon told them before bounding off and disappearing into the first hut.
"If you want a more filling meal there may be some livestock nearby, humans sometimes keep their animals by their homes," Ayunli mentioned, planning on grabbing some food for himself. While the plants on his back were happy with sunlight and water he found that he could use some food in his stomach.

Akheilos watched as Illyphon sparkled his way into a hut, highly amused with such an interesting appearance paired with such a bloodthirsty wolf. It was a great way to throw someone off guard.
"I think I'll join you, Ayunli," Akheilos said. "Though I'm not hungry, I'm also not interested in killing humans right now."
They moved toward a fence behind which were some sleeping cattle, and Akheilos scaled the wood in a bound and landed on the other side. "Now here's a question, Ayunli," he looked over at the wolf. "Are plants usually vegetarian or would they be carnivores if they could grow fast enough to hunt?"

"Curious question, but some plants are carnivores. They're more trap hunters though, but I'm sure they'd love the ability to move quickly to help them hunt," Ayunli explained with a chuckle, following Akheilos into the pen of sleeping animals.
"Although right now we're not doing much more than they are to get food. It's almost disappointing," Ayunli noted as he walked over to an older cow, grey slowly spreading over the cow's face. It would no doubt be slaughtered by the humans within the year.
"Almost," Ayunli grinned and made the death quick, the animal barely had a chance to open its eyes before it died. It didn't even need to move, already on the ground. They couldn't ask for an easier meal.

Akheilos watched Ayunli, impressed at how quick the death was.
"Almost, indeed. But eventually all these animals will wake for one reason or another. We won't have easy hunting forever," he pointed out. He didn't join Ayunli in his meal, undecided whether he was still hungry enough to bother. Instead he looked toward the huts, watching for Illyphon and vaguely hoping that the vampire hadn't gotten himself in any trouble.

Ayunli was happy to get his fill and then some, undisturbed by anything while Akheilos waited for him and Ilyphon to finish.
Ilyphon trotted out of the humans' home, finished but not satisfied, and perched himself on the fence, watching the pair.
"Full?" Ayunli asked as he downed the last few bites he wanted. Ilyphon shrugged.
"I won't need to eat for quite a while," the vampire replied, preening although he had already licked himself clean. Draining blood wasn't nearly as messy as eating meat.
"I'd hope not," Ayunli teased, looking at Ilyphon's swollen stomach, "bet that feels fun, all that sloshing." Ayunli stood and got the blood off his face and paws.
"You're the one with a solid mass of muscle in your gut," Ilyphon snickered, repulsed by the idea of solid food after centuries of going without. But, unfortunately, the topic reminded him of Shamira, and his smile faded.
"Ready to go?" he asked Ayunli and Akheilos.

"Ready," Akheilos answered, not adding to the banter. He scaled the fence again, glancing back at Illyphon and Ayunli as he continued south.
"Do you only drink blood? That doesn't seem like it would be nearly enough to sustain you," Akheilos commented as he trotted.

They trotted along, Ilyphon grinning for a bit before answering.
"Being a vampire has its advantages, like only needing blood. I'm not sure how it works but somehow it does. Besides, it means wolves occasionally find a carcass full of meat but devoid of blood. Free meal for them!" Ilyphon chirped. Of course vampires tended to hunt the thing they had originally been, which is why vampires didn't pair up with wolf packs. Younger vampires didn't have the control for that sort of arrangement to begin with.

Akheilos raised a brow at Illyphon's upbeat commentary.
"Somehow I doubt your intentions," he joked in return, and paused. "Illyphon, do you have any family further south we should be keeping an eye out for?"

"I have no idea what you could possibly mean," Ilyphon feigned ignorance before adding in reassurance, "vampires are hunters. We don't feed our food like humans do. The gift of a carcass means no ill will or intention toward the recipient."
Ayunli snorted at the jibe at humans, but was still glad for the explanation.
"I saw one of my children's pelts, so the rest along with my mate may be alive. Which means there may be five more vampires. More, if Shamira had her babies," he added the last bit with a touch of pride. If he wasn't already sparkling one could say he was glowing at the thought.
"Wait... how do vampires have children, anyway? I thought, like, you were kinda... dead?" Ayunli realized and glanced over, Ilyphon chuckling.
"My children are vampires my love and I turned, saving them from death. Shamira, however, had uh... a special encounter. Of the god variety. Gods don't care about rules like 'undead can not give birth'."

He listened as he walked, his interest definitely piqued.
"So vampires are made, not born?" Akheilos sounded very curious. "Does that make your children adopted, or did you turn after having pups?"
And gods? He frowned, dissatisfied with the thought. For some reason, a God interacting with a wolf for such a trivial cause as making a vampire pregnant seemed to offend him, though only the gods knew why.
"What God did that?" he wondered out loud.

"Correct, vampires don't exactly have operating reproductive organs. My lover, LePhay, is the one who turned me. While I can't say we were lonely we did long for a family. Stumble upon the remains of a war, find some near dead wolves, and boom: we created the next generation. I suppose we adopted them, since we didn't birth them, but at the same time we created what they are now. I'm sure philosophers would have a field day puzzling that one out," Ilyphon explained before his mind wandered to related musings. "As for Shamira's impregnator, she is called Disdemona, often referred to as The Mistress of Fate."
"Impregnator," Ayunli mulled the word over, looking at Ilyphon in bemusement at the word choice.
"Well, Disdemona just sort of walked up to her and poked her. Gods don't need to mate to create life I suppose," the vampire said with a shrug. Ayunli snickered at that, making Ilyphon glance over and roll his eyes.
"Show off," he muttered with a grin, amused by Ayunli growing grass and trees behind them.
